This site is a culmination of the author's current interests
in digital photography and the outdoors. The site's ultimate purpose is to
provide assistance in the identification of plants and wildlife commonly found
in the South Florida area. The site was developed by the author using Microsoft's
FrontPage. All of the displayed images, unless otherwise indicated, were taken by the author.
Many of the images were photographed using an Olympus C2100 camera (with or
without a 1.7x teleconverter lens attached), and
before that, an Olympus C2020 camera, set for a
resolution of 1600 x 1200 and saved in the jpeg format.
In April, 2002, a Pentax PF-80ED spotting scope
and another digital camera, a Nikon Coolpix 995, were obtained. By
attaching the camera to the scope, images of greater magnification can be
taken. This is a relatively new field, which has become known as
digiscoping.
In April 2003, I purchased a Canon EOS 10D camera (6.3 megapixels) with a 100-400L IS lens. Most of the images from April, 2003
and later were taken with this camera. In late March, 2006 I upgraded to a Canon
30D (8.2 megapixels).
The original image
size varies from 400 Kbytes to 3000 Kilobytes, depending on the jpeg quality the
image was saved as. To minimize download time, displayed images are cropped (where possible) and reduced in physical size to a maximum width of
about 600 pixels. Images are then re-sampled and saved in a lower quality jpeg
format. The resultant image size is typically 30-70 Kbytes. Thumbnails
of each image are then created for actual display on the individual pages.
The thumbnails are typically 5 Kbytes or less in size, which result in
fast downloads. A larger image can be displayed by clicking on the
thumbnails. To return, right click outside the full-size picture and
select back.
The site is usually updated on a weekly basis with a summary
of any field trips taken and photographs of new species and/or additional photographs of those species
represented. All costs associated with maintaining the site are paid for
by the author. No income is derived from the site. The author, Tom
Zinneman, can be reached at tzinneman@zinnysworld.com.
