August 5: Estero Lagoon

Along with two photographer friends, I traveled south to little Estero Lagoon located on the southern edge of Estero Island (Fort Myers Beach).  Our main objective was to capture some images of migrating shorebirds still in full breeding plumage.  We were at the Lagoon from 8:00 to 10:00 in the morning.  The tide was at mid-level and the lighting was great.

We found a number of shorebirds, including Semipalmated and Wilson’s Plovers, Least and Western Sandpipers, Short-billed Dowitchers (many still with orange-colored breasts), and Willets.  Many of these birds were still in their breeding plumage.  Other birds seen included Roseate Spoonbills, Magnificent Frigatebirds, Egrets (Great, Reddish, Snowy), Herons (Great Blue, Little Blue,  Tricolored), White Ibis, Brown Pelicans, Black Skimmers, Laughing Gull, Royal and Sandwich Terns.  Although many of the wading birds were feeding, most of the shorebirds were resting on a mud flat.

Following are a few images taken during the trip.  (For a larger view, double click on the desired image.)
