Black Skimmer - Rynchops niger

The black skimmer is a crow-size bird with very long and graceful wings.  It has black upperparts, a white forehead, white underparts, and red legs.  The bill is red with a black tip.  The lower mandible is about one-third longer than the upper.  When feeding, they skim the surface for fish with the tip of the lower mandible cutting through the water.  They also wade in shallow water jabbing at fish.  They inhabit coastal beaches and salt marshes.
