| Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge |
| From Punta Gorda, go north on US17. When reaching
Zolfo Springs,turn right onto SR64. Proceed eastward on SR64 to US27
in Avon Park. Turn left onto US27. Proceed northward on US27 to
Interstate 4. Follow I-4 northward toward Orlando until the BeeLine
Expressway. Get on the BeeLine Expressway, heading eastward towards
Titusville. (Note: You can avoid some of the heavy traffic on the
BeeLine Expressway by getting off of I-4 at the Central Florida Greenway, a
toll road, and taking it eastward to the intersection with the BeeLine
Expressway.) From the Expressway, take SR 407 to Interstate 95.
Continue northward on I-95 to Exit 220, which is SR406. Take 406
eastward through Titusville, across the Intracoastal Waterway onto Merritt
Island. Stay on SR406 to reach the Black Point Wildlife Drive or turn
onto SR402 to reach the Visitor's Center. To reach the Canaveral
National Seashore, continue eastward on SR406. The distance from Punta
Gorda to Merritt Island following the above route is 185 miles. In the
early morning with little traffic, the trip took 3 hours and 15 minutes.
The trip homeward in the evening with heavy traffic took 4 hours. |
