Northern Cardinal
- Cardinalis cardinalis |
|
|
| The Northern Cardinal averages about 8 - 9 inches in
length. The adult male is an all-red bird with a pointed crest. It
has a black patch at the base of its large red conical bill. The adult
female is buff-brown with some red on its crest, wings, and tail. An
immature bird is similar in color to the female, but its bill is dark
colored. These birds live along woodland edges, thickets, parks, and
suburban gardens. They feed primarily on seeds and insects. It is a
permanent resident in areas where it lives. |
