A number of date palms grow well in Florida, but they do not produce much edible fruit because of the large amount of rainfall. In drier regions, such as the Middle East, these trees are an important source of food.

All date palms have leaflets that are modified into spikes near the trunk of the tree. Many other palms have thorns on their leaf stems, but they are not modified leaflets.
