Crested Caracara - Caracara cheriway
   
The Crested Caracara, sometimes called the Northern Caracara, is a member of the family Falconidae.  There are nine species of Caracaras, found primarily in Central and South America.  Only the Crested Caracara is found in the United States, primarily in southern Texas and central Florida.

The Crested Caracara is a large bird with a body length from 19-23 inches and a wing span around 48 inches.  Its overall color is blackish brown with a white throat and neck.  The facial skin is red-orange to yellow in color and it sports a black crown with a slight crest at the back of its head.  They feed on carrion and large insects and small animals and reptiles.
