Eastern Garter Snake - Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis

Garter snakes in Florida typically are bluish-green in color with three stripes running the length of its back.  These stripes may be yellowish or brownish in color.  There are also rows of black spots along the top and sides.  The underside is bluish-gray or bluish green.  These snakes have a maximum length of about 48 inches.

The Garter Snake may be found in a variety of habitats, but is most common near water.  They feed on small frogs and toads, fish, salamanders, and earthworms.  They do not lay eggs, but bear their young alive.
