| Herons, along with Bitterns and Egrets, belong to the family Ardeidae.
They are medium-sized, long-legged birds, some of which have an extremely long
neck. They have large bills for catching fish, frogs, snakes, and
insects. There are six species commonly found in Florida during all or part of
the year. These include the Great Blue Heron, Little Blue Heron,
Tricolored Heron, Green
Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron, and the Yellow-crowned Night Heron. |

Tricolored Heron -
Egretta tricolor |
| The Tricolored Heron, sometimes called the Louisiana Heron,
resembles the Great Blue Heron, but is smaller and more delicate. Its
white belly clearly distinguishes it from all other Herons. Its habitat is
salt marshes, swamps, coastal ponds, mangrove islands, and lagoons where it
feeds on small fish, frogs, reptiles, worms, and insects. |
