May 8: Fort DeSoto Park

Based on several reports of a variety of Warbler species at the Park on Saturday, I decided to visit the Park on Sunday morning.  The weather was perfect for observing, clear and sunny.  Unfortunately, many of the Warblers seen on Saturday were no longer there on Sunday.  However, I did see Indigo Buntings, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, a Baltimore Oriole, a Summer Tanager, Scarlet Tanagers, Red-eyed & White-eyed Vireos, and Blackpoll Warblers.  Most of these birds were observed in the Mulberry bush area.  Very few birds were seen in the east woods, and the influx of thousands of people made other areas difficult to bird.

May 17: Sanibel (Ding Darling NWR)

Four members of the Nature Photography group of the Peace River Audubon Society traveled to the Ding Darling NWR on Sanibel this morning.   The day was a typical Florida day, mostly sunny and warm, a nice day for a photo outing.  Although the tide was about mid-level, we didn’t see very many birds.  We saw one lone Roseate Spoonbill and one lone White Pelican.  Other birds seen included Anhinga, Mottled Ducks, Egrets (Great & Snowy), Herons (Green & Tricolored), Red-shouldered Hawk, Osprey, Black-bellied Plover (breeding plumage), Willets, and a Prairie Warbler.  We saw about 30 different species, typical for the time of year.
