Common Moorhen - Gallinula chloropus

Formerly called the Common Gallinule, the Common Moorhen is a chicken-sized marsh bird that is gray-black in color.  It has a red shield on its forehead and a yellow-tipped red bill.  It has a white rump and a narrow white line on the flanks.  Its latin name means "little hen with green feet."  Juvenile birds have a small, dull red frontal shield and their bills are dark colored with a yellow tip.  This bird frequents freshwater marshes, ponds, and the edges of rivers where it feeds on seeds, the soft under parts of water plants and insects.  They are found throughout all of Florida.
