Eastern Mud Snake - Farancia abacura abacura

This large shiny snake reaches a maximum length of about 80 inches.  The glossy back is black with red or orange-red triangular-shaped bars extending from the belly up the sides.  It lives in and around fresh water, where it feeds at night burrowing through the mud for sirens and other aquatic creatures.  It has a sharp tail which may be used to jab a human, but it is not poisonous.
