| There are two closely-related species of Oystercatchers, the
American and the Black. The Black Oystercatcher is usually found on the
west coast of the United States, while the American species is found on both
coasts. Only the American Oystercatcher is found in Florida. The American Oystercatcher is a large stocky bird about the
size of a chicken. Its distinguishing feature is its long reddish-orange
bill. It has a black head and neck, blackish-brown back and white belly.
There are white patches on the dark-colored wings and tail. Its legs are
flesh colored. They are found along sandy beaches and mud flats, where
they feed on mussels and other bivalves, barnacles, and snails.
