Southern Ringneck Snake - Diadophis punctatus punctatus

The Southern Ringneck Snake is a common snake found throughout all of Florida.  It averages 8-12 inches in length with some individuals reaching a maximum of 18 inches.  Its back and sides are black or dark gray.  It has a yellow-orange ring around its neck.  Its belly is yellow, gradually turning orange near its tail, and has a row of black half moons along its whole length.  When disturbed, it often coils its tail to show the bright underside, possibly to frighten a predator or draw the predator away from its head.  The snake is harmless and usually makes no attempt to bite.
