Spiders |
| Spiders belong to the class Arachnida, which also
includes ticks, mites, harvestmen, and scorpions. Unlike insects,
which have six legs, spiders have eight legs. Instead of three
body parts, they only have two parts: cephalothorax (head and thorax
fused together) and abdomen. Most spiders have eight simple eyes.
Spiders extrude three or four types of silk from
spinnerets on their underside: one for making cocoons for their eggs; a
fine silk for lowering themselves; stronger strands to construct radial
web lines; and sticky silk to entrap prey.
There are estimated to be 900 species of spiders in
Florida. Of these, only the widow spiders (4 species) and recluse
spiders (2 species) have venom that is harmful to human beings.
