There are over 50 species of terns distributed throughout the world.  Terns belong to the family Laridae, which also includes the gulls.  Terns are generally smaller than gulls and their bodies are more elongated.  However, in coloration, they bear a close resemblance to gulls.  Both have webbed feet, but gulls have hooked bills, whereas terns have straight and pointed bills.  Their food and feeding habits are similar, except for their diving practices.  Terns hover and plunge for their food, while gulls alight on the water to feed.
