Turtles |
| There are approximately 35 species of turtles found in
Florida. Of these, about a half-a-dozen are found only in Florida.
Most of the turtle species are semi-aquatic, that is, they spend part of their
life on land and part in water. However, there are a few terrestrial
species that spend all of their life on land and a few aquatic species that
spend most of their life at sea. Turtles are easily recognized by the bony shell enclosing
their bodies. The upper shell is called the carapace and the lower shell
the plastron. The two shells are usually joined on each side by a bony
bridge that may be wide or narrow.
