Florida Water Snake - Nerodia fasciata pictiventris

This medium-sized water snake is typically 30-40 inches in length, but can reach a length of around 60 inches.  It has broad dark bands across the back separated by narrower bands that can vary in color from tan to reddish.  A dark stripe extends from the eye to the corner of the jaw.

This is one of the most common snakes in Florida.  It is usually found around aquatic environments where it feeds on live or dead fish, frogs, toads, and aquatic invertebrates.  It is often seen sunning on banks or overhanging vegetation.
