Willet - Catoptrophorus semipalmatus

A willet is one of the larger sandpiper-type birds, averaging 14-17 inches in length.  Its color is grayish brown with gray legs.  In winter, its chest is light gray; however, as summer approaches, a pattern of darker feathers is interspersed with the gray.  In flight, the willet shows a distinct white patch on its wings.  They are very vocal; their will-will-willet calls identify them immediately.  Their habitat is marshes, beaches, and mud flats, where they feed on insects, small marine animals, and seeds.
